Beagles are so intelligent and easy to train. Our little
girl Beagle was named Easy simply because of that. She
was a couple of months old when we adopted her.
Within a few weeks, she was going to the front door
when she had to go out. We started training her to go
out the first day we brought her home. Once an hour,
we asked her, Do you have to go out? Then, we went out
and said, Go potty.
We repeated the same words every hour. The first week,
Easy slept in her crate at night. She never soiled it.
She would whine if she needed to go out. We would go
to her bed and ask, Do you have to go out? She would
howl and we would let her out. Then, we took her to
the door and asked again, Do you have to go out? She
howled and we took her out.
When we got to her spot, we said, Go potty. By the
time we had Easy for a month, she only had one accident
in the house. And that was a story in itself. She was
on a spiral staircase and went in a plant we had hanging
off it! We immediately took her to the door and asked,
Do you have to go out? Then, we took her to her spot
and said Go potty. She never made another mistake.
After that she no longer needed to sleep in her crate
and cuddled up with us in bed. She was so bright for
such a small puppy. Beagles are so intelligent. And,
so loving. By repeating over and over the same words,
a Beagle learns quickly what the words mean. Consistency
is the key. Easy never needed more than a small amount
of training to learn new things.
She loved being part of a family and loved being included
in all of our family activities. We had the love of
our little Easy for ten years until she got cancer.
That is another story that we will tell another time.
We can only say that Beagles are a wonderful breed
of dog. We have many fond memories of Easy. If given
lots of love and attention, a Beagle will give back
twice the amount of love. They are a loyal companion
and a joy to have in your family.
